Purple TEA From Kenya Finds It’s Possibility In Assam

purple tea kenya

“Purple tea has higher medicinal properties than green and black tea and it’s seeds produce oil suitable for cooking, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries” – Tea Research Foundation of Kenya

Tea expert and scientist, from the Tocklai Tea Research Institute in Assam, has confirmed that Assam can emerge as the next potential producer of one of the world’s most unique and rare tea – Purple Tea. Currently, Kenya is the only country in the world that produces purple tea. Priced three to four times the price of black tea, Purple tea is a rare variety of tea grown in very selective gardens in Kenya.

For the health conscious and fitness enthusiasts – Purple tea brings good news. It contains exceptionally high levels of anthocyanins, which have been found to be abundant in red grapes and red wine. The tea has high levels of catechin which helps curb cardiac arrest and hypertension. It’s been tested and proven to be strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, anti-atherosclerosis and anti-microbial. It is processed and rolled similar to an Oolong, but the flavour is much more earthyrustic and dynamic.

This discovery in growing this wonderful and rare tea in India, puts India and the Indian Tea Industry on the frontline in delivering more healthy tea-solutions to the global consumers.

Why TEA Is The New Coffee

TEA is always a good idea.

TEA is always a good idea.

Lately, news reports extolling the benefits of tea, particularly green tea, have coffee lovers wondering whether they should switch teams. But is tea better? If you normally drink coffee loaded with cream and sugar or a 500-calorie mocha every morning, then swapping out for calorie-free green tea will certainly contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Tea is good for health as it has high antioxidants (Flavonoids and Catechins) that fight free radicals. Our body creates free radicals as a bi-product of living. These free radicals attempt to oxidize lipids, contributing to old age diseases. Providing a healthy boost to the cardiovascular system and fighting cancer cells, tea is an ideal complement to today’s wellness movement.

People around the world are gravitating more towards a healthier lifestyle, which has resulted in the emergence of whole range of types of tea – including green tea, white tea and herbal tea. While tea is widely available at coffee shops and grocery stores, specialized tea parlors are sprouting globally, and Starbucks, the one company that revolutionized the way we drink coffee is now experimenting with tea and contributing to the global tea movement.

In India, green tea consumption is rising at a rate of more than 10 percent annually. The urban, educated and health conscious consumers are experimenting and switching to green tea. So, when the world is joining the tea revolution, are you a part of it?

“Drinking tea with a pinch of imagination!” – 50 Ways to Drink Tea

This is one of my favorite tea recipes for summer- it’s my refreshing Spice Tea Sangria. It has beautiful notes of many flavors of herbs, fruits and cinnamon, with refreshing and citrousy aftertaste.

KEY INGREDIENTS
3 Tbsp Black Tea (Black tea is preferred in infusions, as it goes well with strong flavors of fruits and spices)
2 Cinnamon sticks
3 Sliced Oranges
1 cup Sliced Peaches
1 cup Sliced Strawberries
3 Sliced Lemons
Mint leaves
Organic Sugar
Red Wine (Optional)

PREPARATION
In a teapot or jar, add tea leaves to pre-boiled water and steep for 4 minutes. Strain out leaves and let tea cool to room temperature, then chill in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight. Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher. Top it with lots of mint leaves. Pour into ice-filled glasses. Makes 5 to 6 servings. Also, you can use oolong tea instead of black tea, if desired. Choose a lightly oxidized/fermented oolong to complement the sangria’s fruity, spicy flavors.

Are Flavored Teas Good For Health?

Tea in India 1

“As much as you can eat healthy, it’s also important to remember to drink healthy too. Tea is very healing.” – Kristin Chenoweth

Yes, definitely. Sometimes, life gets better when you jazz it up a bit, so does tea. But what kind of flavor tea you are having, defines if it’s healthy or not.

Flavored teas are becoming popular on account of varied tastes to suit an individual’s taste buds. Generally, black, green and oolong teas are used for flavoring and they are infused with fruits, flowers, herbs, organic essential oils and spices, to bring out the perfect blend. Teas like vanilla, mango, peach, strawberry and cardamom are flavoured with organic essential oils. But as flavored teas, with their strong added flavors, dominate the taste of tea, many manufacturers tend to use lower quality tea leaves for perfect flavoring. Sometimes, the flavours are also compromised using cheap and artificial essential oils. So, make sure to buy tea that uses high quality full leaf tea leaves as base, and organic essential oils and herbs for perfect flavoring. The idea should be to always mix health benefits with good taste because that’s what teaconomics is all about.
